The new journal screen has added features.

The new Journal screen has added more features to help you obtain your running goals easier. Track your weight, calories, run/walk pace, and distance.  The next update will also include an option for the metric system.

Total calories burned is based on your weight and time spent doing the workout on the app. Each warm up/cooldown and run/walk interval were added into the equation for your total calories burned. For example:  you completed 15 minutes of a 30 minute workout. The calorie calculation will be 50% of the total for that workout for that day.Adding pace is optional for calculating calories but will make the total calories burned more accurate.

The screenshots below will help you navigate through some of the new features.

When tapping on the titles or number field you will see this screen. Tap inside the text box to add your number values. A numerical keyboard will appear.

If you are running on the treadmill and not sure what your min/mile pace is you can enter the treadmill speed by double tapping on the word Walk/Run pace. After double tapping the pace calculator will convert your speed into minutes per mile.

As always please leave me your feedback and suggestions. Post a comment below or you can contact me directly at my email: tanya@runhelper.com

  1. Hey There Tanya,
Cool Post, Superior publish. This is worthwhile looking at we can all learn about from. Thank you
    Thanks

  2. My first week and day 1 of week 2 I found all the relevant numbers calculated and entered automatically – day 2 of week 2 the numbers were blank. In your (extremely speedy!) response, you explained that the GPS symbol had to be green for automation. I hadn’t paid the $.99 when I started & now when I click on that symbol nothing happens. Help?

    • Hi Sherry,

Thanks for writing. To purchase the GPS tap on the red circle and the word GPS. A pop up text pop will appear where you can select to purchase the GPS. If you are unable to see the pop up or to purchase the add on you most likely have the in-app purchases restricted on your iPhone. To enable them please do the following:

      – Start the Settings app
      – Select General, then select Restrictions
      – If restrictions are Enabled, scroll down and make sure “In-App Purchases” entry is turned to ON
If this still doesn’t help please email support.

      Thanks

  3. Hi Tanya,

You’ve mentioned that the metric version will be coming in the next update. Any news on when that update will be around? You’ve got quite a following in the Metric countries and we’re all dying to get figures that mean something to us.

    • Hi Scott,

Thanks for writing. We are almost done with the update and are now testing for bugs. We are a small team and are working hard on pushing an update that is both useful and as bug free as we can make it. The update will include additional features that will help enhance your experience with the app. Thanks for your patience.

  4. Thank you for showing me how to have it calculate my calories! I wish that was shown in the help section of the app itself.

    • Kristen,

Thanks for writing back. I will be adding the instructions into the update under the help section to make it more available. Thank you!

  5. Hello. I first want to tell you that I love this ap! The new addition of the GPS makes it pretty close to perfect. I had been using another GPS ap at the same time in order to have this information. This makes it so much easier. There are just a couple of things that I would suggest: 1. I can hardly wait for the metric conversion ability! Canadians just don’t think in miles! 2. I often run on a treadmill. The treadmill keeps track of the distance and I would like to be able to enter it. I am finding it difficult at best to enter the information for the treadmill into those tiny windows. I have finally given up. I can’t seem to clear out the information already on there – and what I enter seems to end up on the wrong side of the decimal. Just entering the walk pace and run pace assumes that I used the same pace each time – which often I do not and I am not really into writing it down each time and doing math to come up with one number. I would really like to have that improved. 3. Last, on the off days when I am not interval running with this ap I still walk (my dog won’t let me not!). It would be great if there was accommodation for walking in this ap – maybe having some set or set yourself goals for those days as well – and would still give the feedback in terms of distance, etc. I have another ap that does this, but it would be great if one ap did everything that I needed.

    Keep up the great work!!!

    Lynn.

    • Lynn,

Thank you so much for writing and for telling me your comments and suggestions. Having the metric values will be available in the next update. We will look into these other suggestions as well. We know the journal screen can be better. We will look into revising it with a bigger screen for entering and seeing running data. Thanks again for taking the time to write to me.

  6. I have been doing my workouts as interval training on a stationary bicycle. Wondering how I would track my progress on that and if you have any ideas with regards to resistance I should be using or RPM I should be using?

    • Ashley,
This is a great question. I’m really interested in what RPMs you are currently using since I’m not a biker I’m not sure what to tell you. Let me know if you’ve found out some information and I will research it as well.

  7. I just checked out the new journal. In the help it said that the app will automatically calculate the calories, however it did not happen for me. I entered the appropriate values for all the other fields.

    • Hi Vrid,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The calorie calculation
also takes into account the amount of time spent doing the work out.
It is possible that the time didn’t get recorded properly and that
could be causing the calorie calculation to show zero. I’m
investigating this further and will fix it in the next update.

  8. How do you calculate walk/run pace if you’re not on a treadmill or elliptical?

    • Chris,
      Hi Chris,
Thanks for writing. The next app update which should become available
within a few days will have an option to automatically track pace and
distance with GPS. This feature will be available as an $.99 in-app
purchase and will require iPhone 3G, 3GS, or the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.0
      or greater.

Some of our customers also use a separate app that tracks the distance
and pace at the same time as they are using our app. Most popular such
apps are Nike+, Nike+GPS or RunKeeper.

  9. I used the updated app this morning for the first time and noticed the new journal feature. I didn’t have a chance to check it out but I noticed there was a space to enter weight. Is there an option to choose your weight as kg as well as lb? If there isn’t is that something you would be willing to consider in any upcoming patches or updates?
